When fall arrives, it means it’s time to find a pumpkin patch and pick that perfect prized pumpkin to take home. Over the years I’ve tried to find just the right pumpkin patch, and I mean honest to goodness pumpkin patch, where you pick a pumpkin off the vine! This year we decided to venture to Bates Nut Farm, located east of Carslbad, recommended to me by my dear friend, Carla aka TinyAngryCrafts.

Back in 1921, when Hollywood up north was still in its infancy, Gilbert and Beatrice Bates purchased an old walnut farm and made it their own, populated with more than just walnuts, such as geese, rabbits, ducks, goats, sheep, and more. Since then, the farm as been tended to by five generations of the Bates family, who now have it open to the public (including school groups) to shop the wide array of preserves, candy, tea, and, of course, nuts. You can also visit with various farm animals! During autumn, people from all over Southern California come to find the perfect pumpkin amid this picturesque setting.
